So you’re new to the guitar world and you need to learn some chords. The only problem is, you’re having some difficulty understanding what these chord charts are all about. Here’s a breakdown using the C chord as an example:

As you can see, the numbers suggest which fingers you should use to apply pressure (fretting) to the strings.  I use the word “suggest” because there is no hard and fast rule about how you play the chord.  You can play it however you want–maybe your fingers are the size of kielbasa sausages and you can’t squeeze all of  your index, middle, and ring finger into the A chord.  No big deal.  Find a way that works.  There’s more than one way to swing a baseball bat.
